German vs American cockroaches: how to tell them apart and get rid of them

Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in Sydney homes, units and food businesses. The two species we see most indoors are the German cockroach and the American cockroach. They look, live and breed differently, so the right treatment depends on which one you're dealing with.

German cockroaches

German cockroaches are small, around 12 to 15 mm long, and light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. They live almost entirely indoors, in warm, tight spots near food and water: behind fridges and dishwashers, inside cupboard hinges, under the stove and in appliances. They breed extremely quickly. The female carries her egg case until it is about to hatch, and each case holds dozens of young, which is why a few sightings can turn into a serious infestation within weeks.

American cockroaches

American cockroaches are much larger, up to about 40 mm, and reddish brown. They prefer warm, damp places outside the living areas: drains, sewers, sub-floors, roof voids, garages and garden mulch. They often come inside through drains and gaps under doors, especially in hot, humid weather, and adults can fly short distances.

Why the difference matters

German cockroach infestations are tackled inside the home, with targeted gel baits and growth regulators placed where they hide, plus good hygiene. American cockroaches are usually controlled at the source: treating drains, sub-floor areas, roof voids and the outside of the building so they don't come in. Surface sprays alone rarely solve either problem.

What you can do today

• Clean up crumbs, grease and spills every night, including behind and under appliances.
• Store food, including pet food, in sealed containers.
• Don't leave dishes or pet bowls out overnight.
• Fix dripping taps and leaks under sinks.
• Seal gaps around pipes, cupboards and skirting boards.
• Keep drain plugs in or covered when not in use.
• Take rubbish and recycling out regularly, and keep bins clean.
